How This MOHRE Gratuity Calculator Works

The MOHRE Gratuity Calculator is an independent tool designed to help employees estimate their end-of-service gratuity under the federal UAE private-sector employment framework. It is not an official MOHRE calculator and is not operated, endorsed, or affiliated with the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation.

The calculation is based on the applicable provisions of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 and its amendments. For eligible full-time foreign workers who have completed at least one year of continuous service, Article 51 provides a gratuity based on the employee's basic wage, with 21 days for each year during the first five years and 30 days for each additional year.

The purpose of this MOHRE Gratuity Calculator is to make that calculation easier to understand. You enter your basic wage and employment dates, and the calculator provides an estimate that you can compare with your employer's final settlement or other official information.

Important: This is an independent estimate, not an official MOHRE determination of your entitlement. Special employment categories, alternative end-of-service schemes, free-zone frameworks and individual employment circumstances may require separate verification.

What Is MOHRE?

MOHRE stands for the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It is the UAE federal ministry responsible for important aspects of labour-market regulation and employment relations in the private sector.

MOHRE administers labour-related services, employment permits and contracts, wage-protection processes, labour complaints and other services connected with the federal employment framework.

MOHRE also publishes information about UAE employment legislation and provides government services through its official digital platforms. However, this website is independent of MOHRE.

For official information, always use theMOHRE website.

Is This an Official MOHRE Gratuity Calculator?

No. This website is an independent calculator and is not an official government service.

The name MOHRE Gratuity Calculator describes the purpose of the page: helping users estimate gratuity under the federal framework administered by MOHRE. It should not be interpreted as suggesting that MOHRE operates, approves or guarantees the calculation produced here.

If your employer provides a different figure, or if your employment falls under a special legal framework, verify the applicable rules and calculation before treating any estimate as your final entitlement.

Who Is Covered by the MOHRE Framework?

The federal UAE Labour Law applies to employment relationships within its scope. Many private-sector foreign workers in the UAE fall within this framework, which is why a MOHRE-based gratuity calculation can be useful for a large number of employees.

However, you should check your employment category if you are:

  • Working in a special free-zone employment framework.
  • Working in the DIFC or ADGM.
  • A domestic worker covered by separate legislation.
  • A government-sector employee.
  • Covered by a pension or alternative end-of-service arrangement.
  • Working under a non-full-time arrangement requiring a different calculation.

The fact that your employer is physically located in the UAE does not, by itself, establish that every provision of the federal private-sector gratuity formula applies to your employment.

MOHRE Gratuity Calculation Formula

For an eligible full-time foreign worker covered by Article 51, the general federal formula uses the employee's last due basic wage.

General MOHRE Gratuity Formula
Daily basic wage = Monthly basic wage ÷ 30

First 5 years = Daily basic wage × 21 × years
Years after 5 = Daily basic wage × 30 × additional years
Partial year = Proportionate calculation based on qualifying service
Maximum = Equivalent of 2 years' wage

The official MOHRE-published law states that the calculation is based on the last due basic wage and that unpaid days of absence are excluded from the service period.

Is MOHRE Gratuity Based on Basic Salary or Total Salary?

For the standard Article 51 calculation, gratuity is based on the employee's basic wage, not simply the total monthly salary package.

This distinction is extremely important because UAE employment packages can contain several components such as housing, transport, commissions and other allowances.

Example: AED 15,000 Total Salary
Total monthly package = AED 15,000
Basic wage = AED 9,000
Daily basic wage = AED 9,000 ÷ 30 = AED 300
Gratuity calculation uses AED 9,000 basic wage

Therefore, entering your total salary instead of your basic wage can produce a significantly different estimate.

MOHRE Gratuity After 1 Year

Under Article 51, an eligible full-time foreign worker who completes one year or more of continuous service can qualify for an end-of-service benefit. The first five years are calculated at 21 days of basic wage for each year.

Example: 1 Year and AED 10,000 Basic Wage
Daily wage = AED 10,000 ÷ 30 = AED 333.33
Gratuity = AED 333.33 × 21 × 1
≈ AED 7,000

MOHRE Gratuity After 5 Years

The rate changes after the first five years. The first five years use 21 days of basic wage per year, while each additional year uses 30 days of basic wage.

Example: 6 Years and AED 15,000 Basic Wage
Daily wage = AED 15,000 ÷ 30 = AED 500
First 5 years = AED 500 × 21 × 5 = AED 52,500
Year 6 = AED 500 × 30 = AED 15,000
Total = AED 67,500
≈ AED 67,500

Partial Years in MOHRE Gratuity Calculation

Employees do not always complete an exact number of whole years. The federal framework provides for gratuity for parts of a year in proportion to the period worked, provided the employee has completed the required minimum continuous service.

For example, an employee may have five years and six months of qualifying service. The six additional months should not simply be ignored when calculating the estimate.

Exact joining and end dates are therefore more useful than manually rounding the service period.

Does Unpaid Leave Affect MOHRE Gratuity?

Yes, unpaid days of absence can affect the qualifying service period. Under the federal framework, unpaid days of absence are not counted in the service term used for end-of-service gratuity.

This means an employee should not automatically assume that every calendar day between the joining date and final working date counts toward gratuity.

Does Resignation Affect MOHRE Gratuity?

Resignation should be assessed under the current federal employment framework rather than relying on older gratuity rules that were previously associated with resignation.

The employee's qualifying service, basic wage, notice obligations, employment category and other circumstances can still affect the final settlement.

Therefore, the MOHRE Gratuity Calculator estimates the gratuity component but does not determine every amount that may appear in a final settlement.

Does Termination Affect Gratuity?

The end-of-service calculation should be considered together with the circumstances of the employment relationship and the applicable provisions of the UAE Labour Law.

A calculator cannot independently determine whether a particular termination was lawful, whether deductions are permitted, or whether another contractual entitlement is payable.

If you are disputing your final settlement with an employer, official MOHRE dispute-resolution channels may be relevant for employment relationships within MOHRE's jurisdiction.

Maximum MOHRE Gratuity Limit

The federal framework places a maximum on the total end-of-service benefit: it must not exceed the equivalent of two years' wage.

Two-Year Wage Cap Example
Basic wage = AED 20,000
Two-year wage = AED 20,000 × 24
Maximum = AED 480,000

MOHRE Gratuity vs Final Settlement

A gratuity estimate should not be confused with the employee's complete final settlement.

Depending on the circumstances, a final settlement can involve separate items such as:

  • End-of-service gratuity
  • Outstanding salary
  • Unused annual-leave payment where applicable
  • Notice-period amounts where applicable
  • Other contractual or statutory entitlements
  • Permitted deductions

This is why receiving a gratuity calculation of a particular amount does not necessarily mean that the same amount is the employee's complete final payment.

MOHRE Gratuity Example

Example: 8 Years and AED 20,000 Basic Wage
Daily wage = AED 20,000 ÷ 30 = AED 666.67
First 5 years = AED 666.67 × 21 × 5 = AED 70,000
Next 3 years = AED 666.67 × 30 × 3 = AED 60,000
Raw gratuity = AED 130,000
Two-year wage cap = AED 480,000
≈ AED 130,000

Who Should Not Automatically Use This MOHRE Calculator?

Not every worker in the UAE should automatically use the standard federal gratuity formula.

DIFC Employees

The Dubai International Financial Centre operates under its own employment framework. Employees governed by DIFC employment rules should check the applicable DIFC regulations rather than automatically applying the federal MOHRE calculation.

ADGM Employees

Abu Dhabi Global Market also operates under its own employment framework. If your employer is governed by ADGM employment regulations, verify the applicable rules before using a standard MOHRE calculation.

Domestic Workers

Domestic workers are governed by a separate federal legal framework. Their employment rights and end-of-service rules should therefore be checked separately.

Government Employees

Government employees may be subject to different employment and pension arrangements. The standard private-sector MOHRE gratuity calculation should not automatically be applied to every government employee.

How to Use the MOHRE Gratuity Calculator

  1. Enter your applicable basic wage.
  2. Enter your employment start date.
  3. Enter your actual or expected end date.
  4. Review your qualifying service period.
  5. Check the estimated gratuity.
  6. Compare the estimate with your employer's final settlement.

Before relying on the result, confirm that your employment actually falls within the federal framework and that the basic wage entered into the calculator matches the wage applicable to your gratuity calculation.

Common MOHRE Gratuity Calculation Mistakes

  • Entering total salary instead of basic wage.
  • Using an incorrect joining date.
  • Ignoring partial years of service.
  • Counting unpaid absence as qualifying service.
  • Applying federal rules to a special free-zone framework.
  • Confusing gratuity with the complete final settlement.
  • Ignoring the two-year wage cap.
  • Using outdated information about previous gratuity rules.

How to Verify Your Gratuity With MOHRE

If you need an official answer about your employment rights, use MOHRE's official channels rather than treating an independent online calculator as a government determination.

  • Visit theofficial MOHRE website.
  • Check your employment contract and salary information.
  • Review the employer's final settlement statement.
  • Use the relevant MOHRE service for your situation.
  • Contact MOHRE if you need clarification about a labour matter.

MOHRE also provides official support channels and labour-dispute services for matters within its jurisdiction.

What If Your Employer's Gratuity Amount Is Different?

A difference between an online estimate and an employer's calculation does not automatically mean that one side is wrong.

Check these items first:

  • Basic wage used in the calculation.
  • Joining and termination dates.
  • Unpaid absence periods.
  • Employment category.
  • Applicable legal framework.
  • Any alternative end-of-service arrangement.
  • Permitted deductions or other adjustments.

The current federal law also provides for payment of wages and other applicable entitlements within 14 days from the end of the contract term.

MOHRE Gratuity Calculator in 2026

When using a gratuity calculator in 2026, it is important to use the current federal framework rather than older articles or calculators that still describe previous gratuity rules.

The federal framework has provisions for full-time foreign workers, other work patterns and alternative end-of-service schemes. This means the standard 21-day/30-day formula should be understood as the general calculation for the relevant category, not as a universal formula for every worker in the UAE.

Quick MOHRE Gratuity Checklist
