UAE Domestic Worker Gratuity
Domestic workers in the UAE are governed by a separate legal framework. This page explains what applies and how to find authoritative guidance.
Who Are Domestic Workers in the UAE?
UAE law defines domestic workers as individuals employed in private households to perform household-related services. This typically includes:
- Housemaids / domestic helpers
- Drivers employed in private households
- Nannies / babysitters
- Cooks employed in private households
- Gardeners employed in private households
- Security guards employed in private households
- Private tutors employed in households
- Other household staff categories as defined by law
The Separate Legal Framework
Domestic workers in the UAE are primarily governed by:
- Cabinet Resolution No. 10 of 2017 on Domestic Workers — which establishes specific provisions for domestic worker rights including working hours, leave entitlements, and end-of-service benefits.
- Subsequent implementing resolutions and ministerial decisions that may have amended or supplemented these rules.
This framework is separate from Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, which governs the general private sector.
End-of-Service Entitlement for Domestic Workers
Under the domestic worker framework, domestic workers who have completed a qualifying period of service may be entitled to an end-of-service gratuity. However, the specific calculation basis, rates, and eligibility conditions under the domestic worker framework may differ from the general private-sector formula.
